Default Brake light came on and manual says I shouldn't drive!

Goody Goody, another problem. Yesterday my Brake light came on and went off a few times on my way to work and back. This morning on my way to work, the light came on and stayed on. I checked the fluid level, it looked a little low but not enough to set off a light, and the pedal is a little stiffer than usual. I seemed to have misplaced my manual so I came here to my favorite Car website to see what you guys could suggest.

Any troubleshooting you guys can suggest? I searched the forum with "brake light" and "brake" and didn't see anything that matched my problem. Help!

Thanks

yes i would check your fluid level first. did you here a chime when the light came on??

look and fill up the break resivor, I think there is a line that says full. The light will be set off even if there is the slightest amound of fluid missing

My parking brake cable is a little loose. So even when I disengage it, I have to lift it up with my foot so that the brake light (and the chime) does not come on (it will go on or off when vibrations while driving).

Could be your problem also.

yes the parking break pedal could cause the light, reminding you that the parking break pedal is depressed

Actually it was just a fluid problem. Holy cow it was only about half an inch low!!! Thanks everyone for your inputs!

That'* an indication that you're loosing fluid somewhere. Check the entire system for wetness at the joints and along the lines. Replace whatever components are leaking. You don't want to find out that you're low on fluid when you go to use those brakes in an emergency situation!

yes check your master cylinder for leaks near the break booster, check the lines and check the rear wheel cylinder

Yeah, check the lines and the wheel cylinders on your rear brakes. If you pull your drums off and everything is wet, you shoudl replace the cylinders.

As the other guys have said, it is important to make sure you have no leaks in the system. A good way to make sure is to keep an eye on the fluid level. It should not drop noticeably in a week of everday driving. It should not drop quickly ever.

If you had not checked the fluid level in the master cyliner reservoir for several months however, a half-inch drop is not abnormal. As the front brake pads wear, the piston in the caliper moves out in the bore to make up the difference. This results in a gradual drop in the level of fluid in the reservoir. Same thing happens to a much smaller degree with the rear wheel cylinders.
