Default Blowin' smoke

Today I was merging onto the highway, gave it some gas to catch up to traffic. I looked in rear view mirror just in time to see the puff of smoke I left behind me, I am assuming it came form the exhaust. I had just completed several short trips in town, and right before then I noticed my boost gauge bouncing more than it usually does and the supercharger whine fluttered in time with the gauge.

What might have caused that?

Black. It promptly went away, I've been looking a lot now.
