Default battery dead, now temp light blinking and defrost only

Last weekend it was pretty cold here. I went out to start the car and the battery was dead. I had interior light but when i turned the key it would just click.
I finally got to work on it this weekend. I took the battery to autozone and the tested it. He sad it was fine so I put it back in the car and charged it up. Car starts fine now but I started to go to town and discovered I had not heat. The car came up to temp as normal, but no heat was coming out. It was just cold air. My temp display light is blinking too.
Any ideas ?

It'* a 1996, with 111K miles.

Electronic climate control in an SE? I assume you have the SLE package (RPO H4U on the spare tire cover).

Airmix actuator doors have been known to crap themselves by breaking a gear after loss of power and power restoration. Do a forum search on 'airmix actuator redneck fix' and you'll see what to check for.

Funny thing is everything worked just fine until it wouldn't start that one day. I pulled the battery, put it back, charged it and now it only blows out the defrost and only blows cold air.

Read my reply above. It clearly explains the mode of failure.

i drove the car to work today and I do have heat now. but for some reason it only blows out the defrost and feet no matter where the controls are set. Of course I still get the blinking temp lights for a couple of minutes.
Looks like I'll have to tear into some more this weekend.
Where'* the door located that switches it from floor to dash to defrost?

first check to see if you have vacuum to the HVAC unit inside the car. No vacuum means now vacuum motors pulling on doors and the default position is for defrost for safety reasons.

Ifyou take off the hush panel above the passenger'* feet you'll see a violet vacuum tube going up toward the firewall at the right side of the car. There'll be a connector to the black tube coming from outside. It pulls apart there and you can check for vacuum (with the motor running!).

You can check for vacuum under the hood by following the vacuum tube from the top of the motor to the Y connector next to the accumulator for the AC and then the line goes to the storage container for vacuum. That might be cracked and letting air in. Check the line for cracks.

Do the last paragraph first. It'* easier.

You can't. Only the dealer can, or someone else with a Tech2.

Don't take this as gospel ... since I'm a newgy

I can't find the post, but was reading where there is a vacuum box thing under the battery on some models. That came to mind, since you mentioned taking the battery out. Might have knocked something loose over there. That'* the only thing I could remotely relate this to.

On the early 92-95'*, the vacuum accumulator is actually between the maxifuse relay center and the WS wiper motor. It looks like an extension of the maxifuse cover (same black plastic).

Look underneath it. There are some delicate exposed and brittle connections under there.
