I hear a loud repeatitive "clank" sound (u no clank clank clank LOL) when I press my brakes. I appears to be coming from back right wheel area. It only makes this sound when I engage my brakes. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what might be causing this sound. Thanks!!!

We'll need some more info...model, trim level, year, ABS?, disc? drums?

When was the last time you changed your rear brakes? Maybe its your pad plate grinding on your drum.... I would take your wheel off and see if anything looks damaged behind your drum / or on your rotor depending what you have. If your pads are worn and your star wheel (on drum) cannot move your pads out anymore they might be loose in there and may clank when brakes get applyed. Take a look and get back with us.

DUH I feel like such the blond that I am. My car is a 93 SE. I do have the anti-lock brakes, and they are drum. I am so sorry. My husband did take the wheel off and said he saw no damage. I have had this car for 2 years and 7 months and have put about 25,000 miles on it. Hubby done the back breaks right after we got it. I hope this helps, thanks.

Brake shoes on rear drums are kinda decieving, what Polarbear mentioned is bang on, when was the last time they were changed?

If there is no damage to the shoes, drums, springs or hydralics in there, it may be bearings?...if there are any in there of course . Checking your previous service records will help you diagnose what may be wrong and what has to be addressed

No hubby checked the rear brakes about two days ago, he replaced the shoes right after we bought it. They have about 25,000 miles on them. I drive my kids around on this car....and that noise just makes me worry about our safety. I'm sorry for any confusion that my incomplete posts may have caused.

If you are certain that you have exhausted all means of inspection based on what you know, it might be a fine time to take the car in for full brake inspection. The reason I say this is because, you are concerned about safety. As soon as your safety or the safety of your children comes into play, its time to take it in and have a professional look at it. We as members of a forum can only assist based on your explanations. I use this forum in order to gain information to take to the pros. Only if I'm 100% confident, then I will tackle it myself.

Thanks for the welcome. I love this site. And thanks for the advice. You know it'* funny my huband is a mechanic, has been all his life. He seems to think I am over reacting, and while I may not know how to even change the oil in a car, I do know that you are not supposed to hear noises when you apply your brakes. LOL One more thing, should I take my car to a GM dealer or a brake specialist (i.e. Menekie)?

Definatly not a dealer, you should goto a well advertized brake place like the one mentioned. The reason is they will do the same work but most likly you will be paying less if you dont goto a dealer.

You also might want to get the Hub/Bearing Assy and possibly the Backing Plate checked out. Welcome to the club!
