1994 bonnie se 3.8 L non turbo..all codes retrieved and tested relevant to each problem as of the older issues.new ones not retrieved and tested for, except for possible symptoms and component testing procedures as outlined in this forum.I was looking for some pro help from experienced mechanics who have had to deal with issues like this-the very frustrating ones.only a seasoned mechanic could answer what I was asking.i don't think crank sensors intermittently fail.they will just fail completely.as far as the icm goes from my experience on my very reliable 87' ford crown vic wagon with some bells and whistles included in this luxury cruiser is that their TFI module will fail completely with no warning signs.they don't just run bad they won't run at all..it'* hard to remember all the details of what works when I need to get one of my 3 cars running again if needed..98' Toyota camry-never needs work, always starts.ford-always starts.having done all the tests for crank sensor-with somewhat slight dificulty for the last 2 or 3 steps because the instructions were kind of sketchy.i got some readings that i think weren't conclusive, maybe my dvom batteries are low.i didn't check them.when being told to look for 0 volts when turning the crank i never got a 0 i got maybe a volt.the last test it seemed as if it wouldn't get what i was looking for a complete crank revolution clockwise and a half or more.it seemed odd that i went over a complete turn by ratchet to get a desired reading, that'* when i also decided to do it by starter when told not to.i checked every wire going into the icm and cps.when the car wouldn't start i would go under the hood and move some wires at the icm connector and get her to fire up every time.so i checked for pin spread and bent em' tighter anyway, check for continuity to cps, etc. worked a few times and then didn't.so i took long needle nose pliers and straightened every wire out pushed pulled twisted each one with a bumper switch attached until it started. while running did same to each wire until i zeroed in one one that made the car run erattic.so i thought it was case solved the first time but wasn't until the second round-so i thought again after it repeatedly started on a half a crank each time..i went for an 1 1/2 hour ride to vermont and she went beautifully at heavy constant load up the mountains,on the way back though it was dark and instead of my usual fast ride ride i took it slower up the mtns.with a constant 50 or so mph speed and she stumbled a few times but remained running instead of dying out completely going up hills or highway coasting.scary feeling on the highway was worse when i couldn't safely get her into neutral to do so until i fixed that problem with the linkage plate on the tranny switch.it also threw a code on the dash until i got home an also ran erractic too.when i got home next day she fired right up again.i wish my friend still had his fancy scanner tool.this sucks.do you think an icm can hiccup once in awhile before it completely fails? is this a warning before it'* completely done?. oh if i only could get the code(*)..i wonder if there is a standalone test to the icm only.there would have to be hot as well as cold tests and what about stress testing?..hmmm...i'll never know unless i got a smart scanner/reader for drivabilty mode testing..OR just getting the codes stored in memory...i hope i never have to disconnect my battery.besides the point this car frame is shot and ready for the boneyard hopefully not for another year from now..
