The AC Compressor just started making noise when I have my AC off. I took a look at it and I can see all kinds of metal shavings around the pulley. When I turn on the AC it does not make the noise and the AC runs fine so that is what I'm doing. I took it to a local shop (Penn Jersey) and they wanted $900 and another shop wanted $850. The guy at the Penn Jersey told me I probably had metal shavings from the bearing in my AC system? Is this not a closed system? How can this get in?

I was thinking about doing this my self since money is tight. The cheapest I can find the compressor is for $379.99 and the accumulator for $54.99. Does any one else know where I can get a better price? Can I just replace the clutch? If I do this and pull the compressor off do I still need to replace the accumulator? Has anyone just replaced the clutch on the system without pulling the compressor off? Any links to tutorials or information period would be a great help!

I have a compressor clutch out on my 93 SE. Wish someone in know would answer this about shaving in the system because I to do not believe they would get inside.

Have you removed the clutch or is it broke on yours. If you did remove the clutch did you do it with the compressor in the car our out?

No I've haven't pulled the clutch. Don't have the special tool. It'* pretty trashed with lots of metal shavings around. Haven't pulled the compressor off either, YET......

Ok..they shavings are only on the outside. Closed system like you thought.

I've never known anyone who could change the clutch only. But I'm thinking about it myself. My 97 that I just picked up is doing the same exact thing.

My buddy the mechanic said for me the price is $350 (compressor is $228 at my local parts store, then add freon and a little labor) I then asked for the average Joe price cause I'm calling the guy I bought the car from, he said $575. The prices you are getting sound like they are whacking you hard and converting you over to 134A from R12 freon. That is more expensive, but not as high as you are getting.

I think its high, but I've called around to other places and no one is below $800 in my area. I also have no mechanic in my area that I can trust so that doesn’t help. Oh... I also have r134 so there is no conversion since it'* a "97". ('')

Without seeing it, I'd say it'* the clutch. If you can find a puller, just replace it. If no puller find a used compressor, but then you're gonna have to evac system and refill.
