Can I do it from underneath without a lot of hassle?
Picked up a pretty big rock dent today.
If not, guess I'll get out the slide hammer and MIG welder.

Yep, the oil pan comes off in a jiffy. Didn't take us very long at all to change the oil pan gasket on my '97. You should have no troubles, especially considering your level of experience.
Bob--if you're interested, let me know:

It will bolt right up.
The other thing to keep in mind when dropping the pan on an L36 is that you have to remove the oil pick up. It'* held in place with two 10 mm bolts. There'* a gasket between the pickup tube and pump. That gasket is only available from the dealership. $1 or so if I remember correctly.
