Default 99 SE won't start

So, I tried starting my 99 SE earlier today and I heard a pop, then nothing. The car chimes, but won't start. Fuses and battery are fine. Thoughts?

Welcome to GM Forum!

Since you've checked the battery and the fuses (and the under-hood ones too, right?), then the next logical culprit is the starter itself. What happens when you turn the key to START? Does the engine attempt to turn over, or is there just dead silence?

The interior lights and dash panel shut off, and the fuel level drops, but it'* silent.

Have you had trouble with it before, or did this all happen suddenly?

It sounds like your starter is dead, though that apparent short when you hit your brake could prove otherwise.

if your battery is good its more likely the cables are loose or corroded

Check for voltage to the starter when trying to start.
