Default 95 Bonne hesitates going uphill

Greetings all,

I'm hoping to get some help from the experts. My 95 will sputter when going uphill in overdrive just before the downshift. I've changed the fuel filter, PCV valve, plugs (twice), and plug wires. Still having the same problem. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

there are a lot of us dealing with this problem. i found this thread to be the most helpful. the long and short of it is this: remove your MAF sensor and use some electronic cleaner to very carefully spray it off. read the thread for more details about why it might be the MAF'* fault. i cleaned my MAF yesterday, and so far i feel more power off the line and no surging on the uphill. let one of us know if you need any more help.

I will second that, I've had this problem 3 times. First time was dirty MAF sensor. 2nd time was plugs. This time I think it'* a combination of both.

Thanks again for the advice. I just cleaned the MAF sensor. It didn't look that dirty to me, but I'll let you know my results after a test drive.

I've had the same problem with my car since I bought it 3 years ago. I replaced all the usual tune up items as suggested on this forum, still have the problem. I read the post recently about cleaning the MAF sensor with electronics cleaner.

Today I sprayed the MAF sensor, throttle position sensor and the other sensor that'* in the front of the throttle body (don't know what it is) and the sensor that'* in the rubber intake hose just before the throttle body (don't know what that'* called either).

Went for a test drive, and the car still shudders under load while in overdrive. Still don't know what the problem is. Car is a '95 SE with 155,000 miles, I bought the car with 122,000 miles, like I said, it was shuddering when I bought it.

Just got back from the test drive. Unfortunately it wasn't the MAF sensor; still the same symptoms. Might try plug wires again.

I'm having the same issues: (1992 SSEi w/ 151K miles) severe stumbling and hesitation under almost no load. Can't engage the SC or the engine hudders hard... I'm suspecting my cat is plugged as the heat shields rattle all the time lately and I recall hearing a weird noise in the exhaust system just before this problem started. The noise sounded like a chunk of carbon breaking losse and working its way down the system.

I'm going to have a local dealer run an exhaust back pressure test to help determine if my exhaust is plugged. If it is, I'm going to remove the cat and straight pipe it for a while to see if this helps.

Have you looked at the ignition coils yet?

I just had the same problem with my 97SE, it lit up the Check Engine light too. Took it to the dealership, after their inspection they said it was my plug wires. They described some as being rotted and making an electrical open circuit. I had them replace all of the plug wires and it'* fine now.
