Hello, I'm having issues with my 94 bonneville. Ran fine yesterday, then I went to leave last night and it wont crank.
When you turn the key, the starter clicks once...the selenoid, but nothing else happens. The lights really dont dim out either.
I checked the voltage at the battery...12+ volts.
Also, I tried swapping in a new starter I had around, still just clicks once then nothing. I cleaned the battery cables during this also.
What am I missing? Anyone have any ideas?

My 90 Lesabre did this once...and magically fixed itself after I scanned for codes with a paper clip. I dont think I can scan the bonneville in the same way though, right?

Disconnect your battery cables and pull the bolts and boots off the battery end. Tell us what you find.

A dead battery can still show 12 volts. Seeing how dim the headlights get while cranking is a better test.

Disconnect the battery cables, remove the bolts, rubber boots & then clean off any corrosion with sandpaper or a wire brush. Apply some dielectric grease to help prevent future corrosion & reassemble. You have to get the rubber boot off the positive side to check for corrosion between the cable ends.

The 94 is still OBD 1, the same as your LeSabre. You should be able to get the codes the same way. As for the cranking problem, clean, clean and clean again. Also, don't be too quick to trust the battery.

If this doen't work, you can check to see if the problem is the ignition switch by installing a jumper from the battery (+) terminal to the * (smallest one) terminal on the solenoid. You should have a normally open switch in the jumper so that you can be clear when you energize the starter. If the starter doesn't turn at all, then you need to service it and/or the solenoid switch.

94 & 95 are the oddball years, you cannot get the codes via jumper.

Don't forget to check/clean the other end of the ground, on the block in back of the starter.
