It sounds like the compass is getting no input signal, or some sort of bogus signal if it always decides to point the same way (the rotation you see at startup is normal). At first I thought maybe the sensor was being confused by, say, a honkin' big pair of aftermarket speakers installed too close to it in the rear shelf, or something like that, but if your calibration buttons don't seem to be working, then the problem may be somewhere in your gauge cluster instead.
Hey, does your trip odometer reset when you press its reset button? Are there any other gadgets in the dash gauge cluster that aren't working either? If so, maybe it'* possible to figure out if all the dead accessories have something in common, such as that they all go through the same harness plug in back, or something like that. (The SSE/SSEi cluster has two large multi-pin connectors going in the back of the gauges, so if somebody screwed up the plug-in process when putting the cluster in the dash, I could imagine several apparently-unrelated things going dead at once.)

Somebody have a book handy to tell him what zone to enter for his magnetic deviation? Once he picks one, he might be able to get through this!
