Default 92 SE needs new engine.. options?

My Girlfriend'* 92 SE suddenly ran low on oil about 3 quarts. that'* when I noticed knocking in her engine. She brought it into the dealership and they said it was rod knock. They quoted her around $4500 to throw a new motor in there. She also has a broken master brake cylinder. She can't afford the repairs. She is willing to sell it to me for $1000. Is this a good deal? I'd LOVE to turn this into a project car of some sort to mess around with. I've read around and I see I could probably throw a L67 in instead of rebuilding the engine. About how much of an investment do you see me spending to get this operable... maybe with some power boosters on the upper end? Thanks!

i got my 93 SSEi for $1800 and it had 123k miles and everything ran fine when i got it. i think you can do better than $1k for a 92 se with a rod going out.

Well, you could make me an offer for my really nice body/interior 93 SSEi with a new engine, supercharger, etc. Has a couple of small items I am working right now (locked rear door, air conditioning adjustment lever, leaking rack and pinion).

Just out of curiosity, where are you located? I'm in search of an SSEi myself...

The suspension is going to need worked on if you want performance driving... Purely GM parts, But it gets spendy.

Yea really, I just did a Series 2 swap and Id be willing to go as low as $2000 on my car, yes, thats running :o

But seriously the SE has a normal 3800 which are almost a dime a dozen, pick one up for lets say $500-600 and throw it in and be a good boyfriend, at least thats what Id do.

If you live in MN and could get the car to my place I would throw it in for $500 and it would take about 5 hours, but 3800s are easy cars to replace engines in so I would give it a try if I were you.
