Default 1999 SSEi Pass Key

My security light is constantly on. The car operates as normal. Any clues how to fix / correct?

It would seem your VATS system has failed into the operate mode where it allows the computer to operate normally. I suspect you had a few occasions where the VATS may have locked out the key for 3 minutes and then started on the next try? That'* what my 98 did.

You can bypass the resistance reading at the lock cylinder by inserting resistors at the plug near the base of the steering column that are equal to the key'* resistnace in the chip. Or you can do as I am doing, enjoying that the readings failed while the car was running and the unit has gone into bypass mode and everything operates great--just no security reading from the aresistor in the chip.

Are there any drawbacks to leaving it as is? Everything operates as normal.

It'* not VATS. That'* somewhat seperate from the security system. My guess due to the age of your car is the trunk latch tamper safety switch has failed.

Open the trunk and remove the carpet from underneath the trunk lid. You'll see a small cable that comes from the trunk lock cylinder. This breaks off the cylinder when it gets old. Follow the cable up to a single-wire connector. Disconnect it. See if the security light goes out.

This safety is designed to set off the alarm and disable the ignition if someone tampers with the trunk lock cylinder. I currently have it disabled on my SSEi for this very reason. It failed, leaving the security light on at all times. A few others here have had the same failure.

I'll do that tonight and report my findings.
Thanks!

FYI there is another sensor.. at the left of the radiator support. right behind the headlight . If the wire to the switch is removed or the switch fails you might get a light. (I'm not 100% on the security for the hood switch though)

The hood switch only feeds the signal to the DIC, not the security system.

I saw the single cable that comes from the trunk lock cylinder, that plugged into two wires. I disconnected it and the security light did not go out.

My car was ordered without the security system option because I had heard of problems and didn't want that. I have a security light for the Vats system that'* on the DIC striip across the dash.

Is the security system for the doors and theft also using the same light?

If his doors are showing as open to the system..they should also show on the DIC. Being the 99 Ei.. the DIC will drive you nuts on an open door.
