Default 1999 SE won't start

Have a '99 SE with 75,000 miles. Here is what it is doing. I went to start it and all the regular dash lights came on, gauges went to where they were supposed to, but the car wouldn't crank, click, nothing! I put it into neutral thinking it may be a bad park switch, still wouldn't start. Lights and everything are fine. Had it towed to the mechanic, and everytime he tries to start it, it starts fine. I tried several different times throughout the day before calling the tow truck, never started. Any ideas?

tap on the starter with a wrench or hammer a little and see if that works. it sounds like a bad starter.
