Yea, remove the plastic access cover from the trans mission.(starter) and you can inspect via that way.

In the last six months the problem has gotten progressively worse. Probably about 500 miles to the quart of oil. I am embarrassed to park it in the parking lot at work. At the end of the day you can see a large stain. It is definitely leaking between the engine and the tranny. I removed the pan again. Nearly impossible to get back off when you put a continuous bead of black RTV. The windage tray adheres to the oil pan and you can't get the pan out of the way to remove the pick up tube. Ended up cutting the windage tray into pieces with a tin snips so it would clear the pick-up tube. I am desperate here! Anybody have any ideas about how to determine if for certain if the rear main is leaking before I attempt to remove the trany???

Hard to tell unless one of us has a set of eyes looking at it. You could always just take your car to a shop, ask for an oil change and they will probably come out and just tell you what it is.

I can't believe all that oil is leaking past a void in the RTV on the oil pan gasket. I am going to pull the tranny and see what the heck is going on. Have a copy of Danthurs 'spring build comes early' as a reference and I am off into no mans land. Got the hub nut off (33mm by the way not 34mm). Now I am trying to get the ball joint loose. Got the cotter key out and the nut backed off but can't get it to budge. Don't want to damage the rubber boot, trying to avoid getting an alignment. Any suggestions?

If you smack the part that the ball joint goes into on the side, usually it will pop right out. You have to smack it pretty hard.

Yea hard! Like you stole it! I did get it out of there.
I did find a thread called 'Axel replacement.94 Bonneville SE' that helped me thru the process. Done for the night. Should be able to get the trans mounts out tomorrow and drop the tranny. After all this work I hope I find a leaky rear main!

I syphoned the fluid out of the tranny with a trick I learned somewhere on this forum. Works great! I will never drop the pan when it is full of fluid again! Really eliminates the mess.

Nothing wrong with siphoning the fluid out of the fill tube.

Heck, I do the same thing with my radiator. I snake some 1/4" aquarium bubble line through the filler on the radiator to the bottom of it.

On that car I almost think it'* easier to pull the engine than pull the trans with out having a lift or the tools to support the engine once the cradle is out of the car. I'm betting the leak is the rear main seal housing. I've seen that gasket blow out before.

Help! Got the frame out, all the wires disconnected, the motor mounts removed, the flywheel spins free of the torque converter but I cannot get the tranny to come free of the engine block. I am assuming that the problem is the dowel pins but I am not sure. I can only find four bolts that hold the two together. Can any one confirm that there are only 4 bolts holding the tranny to the block. Suggestions?

Nope, 5 bolts. One goes the opposite way and you need a long extension to get to it between the block and the transmission.
