This is nearly a dead give away.
When I changed batteries, I didn't look under the rubber boots. After many long hours I did, and I found a ton of corrosion. So bad that the only way to correct the lean bank issue on my car was to replace all three battery cables with brand new GM cables.

What did you replace the battery cables with? New cables or replaced them back onto the new battery?
You mention the check engine light is still on, what codes are present now that you have done this work?

Both either battery connection or battery cable related.
