Default 1992 code 41

I am getting a code 41 (cam shaft sensor)on my 1992. When I took the sensor out, the magnetic pickup happened to be right at the sensor mounting opening. It looks like the magnet is gone, and only the plastic holder is there.

Does the sensor go in from the front of the timing change pulley or do I have to remove the front cover etc. to get to the magnet?

P.*. The engine still seems to run OK even with this fault code.
