transmission fluid black in colour but doesn't smell burnt.
I decided to change my transmission fluid today. Drained it and it seemed to be dark in colour. Last time I drained it was almost 3 years ago Almost 40K miles. Fluid doesn't smell burnt and the car shifts great. What'* the deal here? It'* originally tranny and everything seems fine except the colour.

Black in colour.. like jet black? Or like #2 pencil black? If it is like a #2 pencil black, that is clutch material. Normal stuff, mine had it too. Didn't smell burnt whatsoever, car shifted fine [except to reverse when cold] but it was a #2 pencil type black.. however it never had that 'new transmission fluid smell.' I suggest flushing the tranny if this is the case.. that stuff isn't what you want floating around in your fluid.

If the fluid did not have a burnt smell than you may be ok...
40,000 miles is way toooo long to let the fluid go in the 440-T4 transmissions.... Change the fluid once a year or every 10,000-15,000 miles....
These transmissions overheat fluid in a bad way...
Being that you have changed it, go back again in a few months and change it again...

Thats if you want to keep the trans alive... lol
I live in a warm climate... The failures here can be crazy... How hot does it get up their in Canada? Good climate for the trans most likely..

yer, my trans fluid has been in there for quite a while, but the colour and everything looks good still. Not all the fluid is old though, there'* some new stuff in there from when a tranny line went on the highway (in the winter, thankfully... coulda burned the thing up otherwise?)

I went to autozone and bought a drain plug kit for my pan, now when I change it I drain the fluid first and then drop the pan to get to the filter, much easier. Fluid was still very decent, but I also run sythentic in it. I change it every 15,000 miles. Bought a cooler off of ebay, hope to get it installed in the next couple of weeks. The plug makes the changes much more pleasant, just a tip.
One warning, don't put a plug on if you think you may bottom out, the plug is the lowest part on the front of the car, except for the plastic air dam. I am on my second plug now
