Default Tranny cooler

I was wondering if there is a big advantage to a tranny cooler ,and how easy is it to install.Also I change from 180 to a 195 thermostat for heating reasons as I was having problems with keeping warm this winter,I didnt see a big difference as everyone says its a mod, is it for more HP or better on the engine , transmission.Please tell me what you experienced with these thanks.

John...
my 91 is actually missing the tranny cooler- some time ago....the previous owner took it out.. and shortenend the lines. My neighbour keeps telling me to put it back in (aparently he has one, still haven't got it yet..) but he says it would make a difference. I didn't have one on the 89 either, so not 100% sure if it makes too much of a difference...
But I'm sure that one of the gearheads will enlighten us.

there is nothing wrong with a tranny cooler... most of the time it is heat that kills transmissions...

if it had a cooler on it at one time... i would highly suggest getting one back on there

the 180 thermo is not a performance mod, more of a piece that goes along with performance parts to keep the heat down...

I was curious if anyone knew the differences between coolers. I've seen 10,000lb, 12,000lb, 20,000lb, etc coolers out there, and not really sure what that actually means. I'd imagine that it has to do with the ammount of cooling it can provide, like on air conditionerrs on houses, 2 ton, 10 ton unit, etc. My 91 didn't come with a tranny cooler, but I was looking into getting one in time for summer, so I wanted to know is bigger = better(in terms of tranny coolers at least ) or does it just become overkill after a point. Also, whats the unit that they come with stock rated at. Thanks for any help guys

Don't go too big unless it'* thermostatically controlled.

10000-12000 GVWR whould be fine.

And actually the 180 degree thermostat change is primarily aimed toward the supercharged (talk about heating up) and the Series 2 NA folks that could heat up the intake and have it crack by the egr.

So for my 90sse 180 thermo wont make a difference.Whats involved in hooking up tranny cooler and again is it worth it for 90 sse.thanks

it is definatly worth it for your 90 SSE. heat is the biggest killer for your 4T-60. i have a 20k on my 92 SSE SC. i also recommend dropping the pan and getting out that old tranny fluid. when you install it. but DONT get a professional flush. it will be the end of your tranny.

I plan on doing my own tranny fluid and filter change soon as we have decent weather, any tips . I see tranny coolers at canadian tire look pretty easy ,just not sure about hooking up lines.

The lines are easy... Usually they hook onto one of your hoses that go into the transmission cooler part of the radiator and sneak out behind a headlight to the new cooler.
