That doesn't seem like much torque to be holding the struts on a car, but I'll take your word for it. I guess if I recall, the buick STB i installed on my GTP was only supposed to be torqued to something like 20, and I thought that was nuts too, but it stayed.
Well thanks again. I'll start checking out my options for procuring the necessary parts. There are a few junkyards around here, but I also have family members inside of GM, so i'll see what'* cheaper.

Remember that the torque applied to a particular fastener will be dependent on the diameter of that fasterer. I think the strut studs are 8mm. Not too big. I've got 2 93 Bonevilles both in front of my house tourqued to that spec, and I drive hard enough to flex my strut bar

What year is Tim Smooths car? He'* on cardomain. He put one on. Someone else did, too. We need to find out what years will work or not. That res could be a problem. Need to get a couple years to drop a straight edge across their strut towers and check for clearance. This is a GREAT CHEAP handling mod.

Yeah, but my front left tiring is weaing out faster since I usually drift offramps since they are easier than the nearrow mountain passes around here. Working on a STB but need to make sure it'* not too stiff in case of an accident so it allows the motor to go down underneath the car still and the engine compartment crumples.

Ok, I just put a straight edge between the edges of the two strut towers on my '89, and the brake res is about 1/4 - 5/16" below that line. Judging by some pics of 92-99 bonnies i've found, it looks like it'll work, but it'* sure going to be close. :? Can anyone verify that the newer STB will work on my '89? It also looks like the hood clearance would be tight. Any problems there?

I say it'* worth a try, anyway. After all, how often do we really have to take that res cover off, anyway?

I can't remove the brake resivour cover without removing the STB as well. There is just not enough room between the bottom of the bar and the top of the cover.
Someone else here has the STB on a first gen fwd bonne and has a lot more clearene between the brake cap and the STB. I am not sure if he just has a different resivour or if he left the silver spacers that connect the two outside bolts together on and put the STB over top of them. I removed those two spacers because there are no spacers on the newer H-bodies that use a STB. The STB spreads out the load that the spacers are supposed to spread out.
