I was thinking about going and picking up a nice remote starter tomorrow for $25 (boxing day in Canada :P ). Has anyone ever installed one on this gen? Would it be a tough thing to do with the stock security etc.?

I don't want to have to pay alot for someone to do it for me...

5 Wire locks are going to make it a little more difficult if your not familliar with how a relay works but the basic starter shouldnt be too hard. Factory Alarm disarm is a light green wire in the drivers kick panel. It is a negative trigger

Fortunately, no 5 wire lock circuit on our cars. Positive trigger only.

What happens if you use the remote start but your engine doesnt catch right away? will it leave the ignition in the run position until you start it manually? sorry if this is a hijack, im interested in a remote starter in my car as well.

With most starters you can select how long of a crank time it will have, 3 second, 5 second, etc... I know when I installed the starter in the Malibu I had to have 2 ignition wires hooked up, but only had 1 so it would crank and not start. That is where the safety came in on the starter.


As for installing it in the 87-91 cars. It must be similar to when I installed one in my 1990 Cutlass Supreme. Pretty simple, just take your time. I didn't have security on my Cutlass, so I am not sure what you will have to do to bypass that one.

I have a remote starter, as I've said before, it'* of the dirt cheap "Bulldog" variety from Wal-Mart. My dad installed it himself in an evening or so, you just need to know wire colours and what to splice, etc. I'm not even sure if it works anymore, I guess you get what you pay for

If it fails to start the car, it stops cranking after x number of seconds. It then waits a bit - 5-10 seconds maybe - and then tries again. Mom'* Nissan also has the Bulldog setup, and with its characteristically long cranking time, it'll often be the 2nd try that starts the car.
