Glad you got it fixed. From your description (not opened for 2 years) I was pretty sure it was just a rust problem. I spray mine with lithium grease, and through the latch should be adequate. Make sure your windows are UP when you do this to avoid potential overspray getting on the glass. When you do this, do the front doors as well. When you do the front doors spray a shot of grease into the lock mechanism through the key slot to prevent them from freezing in the winter.

I have a 91 SSE. The back doors have the same problem you described - little resistance in the handles and inability to open them.

I have found taking a standard slim jim (purchased at any parts store for prob $22) into the door about 4 or 5 inches from the handle, at a 45 degree angle, and moving with an upward circular motion will snag something and reset or relatch whatever was disconnected.

Did you figure out a specific repair that permanently fixes the problem when you took the inside of the door off?

His door lock/latch mechanisms were rusted. The door panels were removed and the mechanisms sprayed with them with WD40 while cycling them to free them up. When they were working, he sprayed them with lithium grease to keep them that way.

It'* happened to me on my Jeep Comanche. Only pass door though. Removed the door panel and changed the latch. Two Bonne in the yard had the same problem. It'* hard getting into the back if neither door opens. 3 hours ? Ouch, what a bill.
