Default start

if you have a remote switch you could jump the batt cable at the starter to the bendix
to see if she turns over.
Have to know which two though.

I got the voltage at the starter...I couldn't get a steady reading for some reason, but it was moving between 6v and 9v...it didn't go any higher then that. Voltage at the battery still 12.4v. The connection at the starter looked just fine though. So, does this tell you anything?

Ehh...It'* the starter, got it going after a mighty whack with the hammer. Now, to fix myself or take it to a mechanic. Also, is there a problem with junkyard starters or should I just get a new one?

Well I see that my first suggestion ( on MSN) worked. Just had to "tap" it at the right spot, lol.

As for changing it. Not very hard at all. If you have the time to do it. 3 - 10mm bolts holding on the inspection covers, then your power connections and I think 3 bolts holding the starter in place, 2 under it and I think one in the front of it. I could be wrong about the one in front of it.

I would call a couple of parts places and see what the price is and I would also call Crappy Tire.

Then maybe call a yard. Just remember, the starter you get at the yard may be as old as the one you have on the car.

Bought a Champion reman starter at crappy tire, cost $94.99 after core. Still contemplating doing it or not...I don't think I will have the time, and any decent mechanic should be able to do this quickly, especially since I (and mike and boosty ) did the diagnosing. I just hope I can get her going again so I don't need a tow...

Captain
You should definitly do it yourself. Save the money- and there'* nothing better than fixing it your self...so rewarding. Just remember to disconnect the battery :P :P :P
I had to use a shim to get the proper gap- and its been great ever since. I actually repalced all the wiring, alt, battery (GM professional) and starter. 2 year warranty, about 140, GM atarter. I would not recommend a yard starter, i did that on the 89 and I replaced it twice in six months. What a pain.

It'* a quick swap out. Even if you've never done it before.

Glad the inspriation i gave you yesterday worked out.

Convo:
Capn:battery seems good...starter only clicks once
Me: Have someone hold the key, meanwhile crawl under and whack it...
Capn: uh ok..I'll do that
Time passes
Me: well...get out there!!!!! Go hit something...l

On the first day, before he had to leave for work, he told me the same thing. I said it sounds like the starter,. Go out and "tap" it, don't crack it tough. But it didn't work. Maybe needed a harder "tap", lol
