The steering is heavy. Even heavier if the engine stalls; like when the TPS was bad and it would stall off idle while turning corners.

My 'gain' button doesn't click down either. Instead of a dime, I use a folded piece of paper. The yard wanted $8 for a used/cracked button.

Mine had a stutter on acceleration too. Turned out to be a cracked plug and failing wires. A full tuneup did wonders. At over 114k miles, I think they were the original wires too.

The coil pack swap is very easy. I pulled my GM coil pack out of a '94 Corsica. Not wanting to cart all of my tools through the junkyard, I actually forgot the ONE wrench that fit the wiring harness bolt. Fortunately, I had a small flat-blade screw driver that I wedged into an open-end wrench and got it started off.

Just got finished with the tune-up. The plugs looked horrible! Wires looked to be orginal too, needless to say it was a sorry state of affairs. Car runs GREAT now, thanks for the advice. I look forward to it running even better after the delco swap.

My 91 needed a lot of loving when I got her, and ironically enough, it needed new engine mounts. I haven't experienced the mechanical issues that you have mentioned, But Bill, John and Jerry are good BC members to ask- another member that you might want to PM is Randman, definitly the best gearhead for this gen, but actually there are many members that can help you with any issues that you may have. The gain control...ya I miss that, and I'll agree with Jerry- with the control right in the middle it does sound best.
But it is hard to find the assmbly in nice working condition. Unfortunatly, the covering over the button, tends to wrinkle over time, or cracks entirly. I no longer have one, that section in my console holds 3 switches for the LED lighting.
Do the ignition swap for sure- well worth it. You won't notice the difference right away- but after a week of driving you will. Gas milege improved, as well as a more responsive throttle. Easier starting too.
