Yes the Tank has to be dropped onto the ground to be able to remove the Fuel Pump... I just did this to my 95 the other day.... It was not fun... Having a helper would have made it easier...

Another thing is that while you have it down, look for any other parts that may need changing in the near future, like the tank itself if it is getting really corroded. Make sure you also change the sock on the fuel pump also. It is cheap to change and you already have the tank down.
Yes the tank has to be dropped, it makes it easier if you siphon the gas out of the tank into a jug or two, or punched a hole into the tank and drain it out, then JB weld it back up. I don't know how much gas was in the tank when you lost the FP, but i knot it makes it a lot easier. Than and plenty of bust rust.
The pump have been broke for a while ! I just took a universal Bosch pump and placed it beside the fuel filter, and it work ok !! It took me a while to find a pump here in Norway

The only time I would see punching a hole in it to drain it is ONLY if you are replacing the tank.
kjempen,m I went to the library and got the chilton'* manual and it gave me detailed info on changing th e pump in my 90 SSE a couple of months ago. great help. I got the pump, sock, filter and had to replace the straps, cause I got bent and lost patience when I tried to unbold them ( I just cut them off ). Good luck. .....It took me about 3 hours from start to finish after I got the car up on blocks and parts in hand. The air tools really helped. Oh and my son helped me.
