I started my day off with the needle saying i was at 1/4 tank left. 50 miles later, on was on my way home for the day and noticed that the needle was at EMPTY! and wasnt moving. I got off the freeway and the needle would only move up on high acceleration, so i knew there was at least some gas in there. The last time my needle behaved like that, i refilled my tank up with 17.8 gallons. That was about 4 months ago. This time it filled up at 16.2 gallons, i thought WTF? Has anyone else had problems/troubles with their tank sensor?

Sometimes my gauge does the same thing. Yesterday my car read less than 1/8 and it held 16.5 gallons. I think iti'* a typical GM fuel gauge.

On a lot of the 92-99s the needle drops really fast after it gets to the 1/2 mark. Definitely not a linear relationship.

Every GM car I've had has been like that - at 3/4 it is really half tank.. One reason it is really bad on the Bonnie is that the tank is really an L and when the sender is as far up as it can go, it is not to the top. So it takes three or four gallons just for the sender to move.

Second the sender does not go straight up and down but swings in an arc so the first and the last bits really do not mean much. Finally the general always tries to have two gallons left when it hits the big E but the factory guages are by no means accurate.

You really do not want to run it completely out for two reasons - the fuel pump is not getting cooled by being immersed any more and sucking air is really hard on it.

BTW the factory says the tank holds 18 gallons but you can get another 1.2 gallon "up the neck".

I totally agree, that one incident months ago was the first and only time it will ever happen. I get paranoid about running my fuel system dry, so i usually fill up at around 300-350 miles, giving me about 2 gallons left to fall back on if neccessary.
