Engine Swap
The time has come... finally for OSG to put ol' pearl back on the road. Thanks to the help of darkshadow, I just got the engine/trans today. Our shop is currently closed due to some unpaid bills, but early next week we should be open. Work will start only then. This will be where I shall come with updates and questions and such.
Oh look, here'* one now. DS'* engine is a 90 with a GX3 []. Mine is an 89 with a 2.97. The majority of accessories and whatnot are going to be from my engine [considering I know they are all good], which shouldn't be any problem, except when it comes to the ECU. Do I need to swap out the ECU from the GX3 or will mine be fine? Or should I swap it anyways because the 90 programming will be better than my 89 [late 88 btw]. Also, a GM tuners ECU is on my short term list.. just in case that matters.

Glad to hear from ya OSG...I don't know if we have even talked since I went and did something stupid like take out a loan to buy a SSEi. Glad you are bringing her back. My '89 is a project on the back burner now. I needed something more reliable to go to work and such.

Swap the engine, trans and ECU. That will take care of it. Only thing is you should check the wiring schematics in both to ensure the pins are all there and line up the same.

I don't have the ECU, however DS said he still has it if I need it. I'm just curious if I shouldn't even mess around with my ECU, because of incompatabilities? All I need to know is that my ecu will start, run, and drive the 90 engine, for at the most a month until I spring for a new ECU.
el capetan: why did you do such a thing? What ever happened to stopping the 92+ oppression? Bastard went to the other side!

Justin there are afew things you may want to check....
The Tranny connector and pin out should be the same without any changes between 89-91... No issues there...
The 90 engine will run off the 89 ECM with no issues... But it will have the data set for the 2.97 gear ratio.... At the least you could get the other ECM or just the Mem-Cal chip out of it for the 3.33 trans...
I know it will run, and shift... And hit lockup at the right speeds... So you should have no issues there..
There may be a slight change in the fuel injector harness, if the 90 has an extra pin in the FI harness, then go ahead and use you 89 harness on it, this will cause no problems...
The swap should go pretty smooth for you as these cars didn't change a lot from the 88 3800 - 91 3800( Vin C )
The 3.33 gearing will be a fun round the town car
