do you have spark? I would look into replacing your coils and/or ICM

i have the same code ( 42 ) now in my 88sse and i replaced the icm and the coils so now im almost 100% positive its the engine wire harness that comes from the icm as it gave me a problem last year so now its time to be replaced completly..

if its not the icm or coils then check you wire harness for rips or tears..

also check the main engine ground wire right under the ignition coil module... that was an issue for me as well...

and im not to sure about the back firing.. i never had that happen with code 42....
