It'* getting that time of year again and I was wondering what'* involved in converting R12 to the R134 refrigerant? Any tips and tricks that can be shared here? I know all you guys with the newer bonnies don't have to worry about this cause it'* already been done.

No matter what you do...replace all the seals in the system. They are different and will be the first thing that goes in the system.

There'* still an R12 option, too.....which is worth it, since it works better. Some shops still have a 'secret stash' of R12 laying around. I know 3 here that do. It might cost a little more than 134 as it gets rare, but it'* still possible, and prevents having to do everything else.

A good retrofit requires several steps, some of which you can't do yourself....

It is important to vacuum out all of the old freon, and make sure that your system can retain the negative pressure for a period of time (no leaks). You must use pressure gauges on the low and high sides while retrofitting. Some cars require an adjustment in the pressure cycling switch, and some require new orifice tubes. The new oil needs to be compatible with your system.

Some cars require larger condenser fans.

It is tough to do a good job unless you are experienced. I would recommend taking it to a good car A/C shop and having the leak fixed, and then recharged with R-12 or retrofitted to R-134a there.

after today i don't think i'll be needing the ac for awhile. We just got 8 more inches of snow and more on the way. When is spring gonna be here. I wanna start working on my car.
