89 Bonneville SSE..SHE IS STILL CLANKING
Riddle me this Batman...I have previoulsy posted regarding thestart up clank she is maing and metallic noise on idle. Seems to be around the serpetene belt..thought previously the noise went away onc ethe belt was removed..but after changing the power steering pump on the advise of one mechanic who gave me a gratis inspection, and just now changing out the alternator, where my friend said it seemed to be the problem,,the noise is still there. Now my friend thinks it has to do with the timing chain or something in that area..good oil pressure, good over all engine power, not burning a lot of oil..what say you, ole wise men of rubber and steel? If it is that, one book says the engine needs to be removed to get at the balance rod and all that, is that true..fire away with some questions, I need this one fast...Thanks....

89 SSE CLANK CLANK UPDATE
Mr. Bastard..did you see that it appears that the noise is there regardless of the belt being on or not . My mechanic friend Lewis seems to think the problem is internal, a fact he has said all along..I didn't want to believe him, but it seems he may be right...on start up, the engine seems to rattle initially, almost like chatter type metallic noise..is why he thinks its the timing chain or balancer shaft, something deeper in the engine..then it balances out with revving engine some.....he suggests tearing the front down to inspect..the books i have looked at to seems to suggest that the engine may need to come out to access the parts involved, is that true in your/or someone elses' experience? This has me very upset, I love this car, have had it since new, and I am a stubborn mule and I ain't ready to part with her just yet..please, ask around, need to know about this timing chain bit, and balance shaft, are they a big deal to r&r? Thank you...

All I've read different in this thread is that you have replaced the power steering pump and alternator without finding the source of the noise.
