Default '88 to '89 gauge cluster swap

What if I wanted to buy an '89 SSE cluster and replace my current cluster with the newer one?
Is this possible? Will the gauges work correctly? They should just pop right in.

It will work as long as you get one that uses the same options as your old cluster (IE: Floor shift, Type & Position of gauges, Driver Info Centre)

well... my cluster is for a '88 LE model, but the one I want is from a SSE '89 model
will it still work, because the gauges are NOT in the same spot, and my model(LE) has only 3 gauges where the SSE one has 5???

In this case, if the connector is wired the same then only the gauges that your old cluster had will work in the new cluster, therefore 3 out of 5 should work!
