Reading OBD 1 codes
Hey when you use a paper clip to read the codes on the OBD 1 port do you just connect the A and B connections with a bit of wire or do you have to ground each port seperately?
I just connected A and B with a paperclip but don't know if it gave me the right code or if was just gobbley gook.

You got the jumper right, just have to watch the flashes carefully--they each repeat 3 times, and it'll start and end with "12"
So you'll see something like this:
flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-pause-flash-flash
longer pause
flash-flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-flash-pause-flash-flash
longer pause
flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-pause-flash-flash
flash-pause-flash-flash
That would indicate a code "22" whatever that might be (this is all hypothetical)--the system starts and ends with "12" which is just the "hey I'm in diagnostic mode" code
Hope this helps,
Jim

Ok will i got code 23, IAT sensor low temp indicated, and code 34, MAF voltage too low. I fixed the code 23 problem by changing out the splices I was using to connect the wire extensions to the original wiring harness. My open element air filter means I need about a foot more wire to reach where the IAT is plugged in. Code 23 appears to be gone but on the way home this afternoon code 34 came up again.
I recently did the MAF screen removal mod but did not get any codes the day of removal or for several days afterwards. I only got the two codes after I had tried to splice into the headlight harness to power a light. I guess I caused a short and that is what caused some of my problems. Do you think i fried my MAF with the short or is it something to do with the screen??
I can't find the old screen I think someone at my house threw it out. I can just go to the junkyard and get another one tomorrow hopfully and see if that works.

The junkyard around here does not have any MAF'* at all either. Every single 3800 in the yard has had the sensor revmoved. I am going to go to a yard about 30 min away tomorrow and hope they have some.
