Default 87-91 SE dash clusters

So, today to kill some time, I'm rippin up my old dash cluster to have a look see at why on Earth our cars trip odos decide to stop working when the wee number wheel hit "9"

So, in the process I discover that the Systems Monitor is missing SO MANY LIGHTS. The one for the windshield washer fluid level...nothing, the low fuel fuel indicator..nothing, ajar doors indicator...nothing, ajar hood..nothing, ajar trunk...notihing..

This is bloody crazy. Anyone know why and where I can find these lights and their little housings????

I don't think your display is set up to display that info - don't know if the wiring is there. My 89 said "Driver Information" and it had all of those little lights.

Here are some pics that I took. It illustrates my efforts better

Reset buttons

Guts of the Systems Monitor

Backside of cluster notice no copper contacts for various Systems monitor items...which begs the question. WHY A SYSTEMS MONITOR??

Right. The systems monitor doesn't do much, does it? You need the Driver Information display. My 89 also had a lamp monitor on the left side, where yours is blank.

I guess the only was is to live in the doldrums of SE, until I step up to SSE/i

It would be nice to have all the idiot lights though :?

I'm not to sure if you're wired for it either, but I have tons of those behind the dash lights. I can hook you up with as many as you need

I appreciate the offer, but my dash cluster doesn't have all those copper contacts on the Systems Monitor. You have the SSE which comes with all the idiot lights. Consider yourself lucky. It would howver be nice to have the low fuel lamp come on. Darn SE :?

oh well, still goes like snot

It'* an option to have all of those lights - Mine was an SE. Don't know what would happen if you swapped out the gages cluster. The SSE is another story - it has a compass and even more idiot lights.

Nope...sorry Jr, I ran my fingers over the gearing wheel and it rolled pretty smoothly. The system is a fairly easy mechanism, I was trying to figure out what that cylinder thing does (on the top left of the image). I was under the impression that it was hooked up to the gearing system electronically.

The trip clock and the odometer work in unison. In between the 2 units there is a plastic rod with a loosely wrapped metal coil (almost like a spring). Its understandable to see that if one fails so would the other. But...like in your car, the trip is dead but the odo still works.

The thing looks fairly easy to operate, I just don't know much about how it works. :?
