Default Series I Walbro 255 Installation

Hey guys I was excited to get this thread started so here we go. I'm hoping this weekend to install the Walbro 255 I FINALLY got today. I'm going to provide as many pictures as possible of the installation and details as far as fitment or any potential or realized problems with its use. Might be helpful to anyone else looking to do this.

With that here'* what I got so far:

I ordered the pump from www.Fuel-Pumps.net over a month ago. I can't really blame them too much for that because they are in Florida and evacuated for the hurricanes. Their staff is very nice, although they aren't good at returning phone calls. Of the 5 times I was told I would get a call only twice did they follow through. Their tech department is very knowledgable and friendly. I learned a lot from them about our specific pumps.

The packaging was adequate with ample cushioning for the pump and parts bag. Here are some photos:

Thats it for now. More to come saturday evening

Yup, I remember how easy it was to install the Walbro 255 LPH High Pressure pump in my old 1987 Dodge Lancer ES (Shelby Lancer clone). Teamed with a AFPR and +20% injectors, it held up pretty well to 20 psi. And I was still running rich.

Looking at that pump it looks like it will fit right in without much hassle. I have swapped fuel pumps in 2 Bonnevilles (my 1992 SE and 1994 SLE) and my parents old 1992 Park Avenue Ultra (one of the two times it was changed).

Good luck.
P.*. Do you have new straps for the tank just in case you need new ones? And oil the strap bolts real well a day or two (or do it two days in a row) before you drop the tank. I'm betting you'll have more trouble with the straps/bolts than the pump.

Thanks for the advice. I actually pulled the pump about a month ago just to see how it looked, make sure it was getting proper power, and assess the condition of the strainer. Good voltage, bad strainer haha.

At what point do you need the 225 GPH fuel pump ? With my mods am I on the edge ?
I " think " my fuel pressure is fine but I haven't put a pressure gauge on it during a run.

It'* not a 255 gallon-Per-Hour pump -the car would never run, and even if it did the tank would have to be filled approximately every 4 minutes.
I highly doubt you are needing 255 lph of fuel with the mods you have, but, since your car is a 1992 and if the car still has the original fuel pump and fuel tank it wouldn't hurt to put a new tank on with one of these Walbro/Holley (Walbro makes Holley'* pumps) 255 LPH High pressure pumps. The 1992 fuel tanks were/are very prone to having the baffles fall apart and suffocate the fuel pump, causing bogging and stalls, especially on right hand corners.
If you don't want to spend the money on a brand new tank (my parents paid GM $300 for just the tank) I'd suggest checking www.car-part.com for a fuel tank off a 1998-1999 Bonneville in a salvage yard near you. Then get the Walbro pump, a new strainer, fuel filter, possibly some new tank straps, and you should be set to go for a while.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'm gonna yank the tank out. :?
Since I've done all these mods in the past few weeks. I don't want to bake an engine
due to a lean condition. I'm sure it'* probably in the condition you spoke of.
So far I've had to fix EVERY typical 1992 issue.
At what point do I need the 255 pump ?

Would it possibly be worthwhile to run that pump on something like my car, where all I really have is a CAI right now? I've got more mods in the future....Like a smaller pulley...MSD Coils and wires...180* t-stat and colder plugs and opening the exhaust up, along with probably an INTENSE chip?

Guys, there would be NO benefit to installing that pump in your car. DrJay is the first to reach that point. I'm not even close to needing it. MAYBE after rockers and porting, but probably not even then. The stock Series 1 pumps outflow the Series 2 L67 pumps

GOOD .. cause I'm spending too much money already. At least I don't have to buy a fuel pump. Maybe I can sleep now. Heck , I was already plotting my next move for the purchase. I would hate to eat bologna sandwiches for a month because i bought a fuel pump I didn't need. Thanks.

Why don't you get a piece of paper.

Then make two columns, and make one "me" and one "Dr. Jay"

Once you have done that, under the "me" column, put all the mods you have [MODS!! not fixes of broken stuff, replaced with factory stuff].

After finishing that, write down all the mods Dr. Jay has.. you may need a separate sheet of paper for this step.

Now, you will see, he has a much more extensive list of go fast goodies sitting under his hood.. this is why, he needs this pump, your pump will be fine for a looong time.. don't worry about that.
