Default A/C Problem--compressor/cooling fan cut-out.

My A/C compressor keeps cutting out along with the cooling fans. I've replaced all the sensors and checked the refrig. level to make sure it'* within specs. When I disconnect the battery and clear out the ECM, then it begins to work again and will work from several hours to several days before the problem appears again. This car has climate control and the controller has recently been changed out as well with no luck in correcting the problem. I'm out of ideas.......anyone have a few other ideas I could check? Thanks.

It'* a '91 Olds Regency '98 Elite.

Also, where is the compressor clutch relay? Is it on the bank of relays on the firewall....and which one is it?

Where is the pressure switch on that car? In the vicinity of the alternator like ours? Try jumpering that switch and see if the compressor stays on. If that solves your problem, the pressure switch is bad or you're low on R12.

The pressure switch can be easily jumped out by unplugging the connector from the receiver dryer and simply using alligator clips to complete the circuit between the leads on the harness. That'* how I do it...even on my 79 T/A.

The low pressure switch is on the side of the receiver/dryer. I have jumped the connection, but when the ECM cuts it out even that will not make it work. I have to clear the codes by disconnecting the neg. terminal on the battery. Then it will work again. Also you have to be careful about jumpiing the low pressure switch as this will cause the evaporator to freeze up and you'll cooling efficancy. Why do I need it to work now in December? The defrost uses the compressor....and when the car sits in the sun all day it is still a bit warm in the car.

Ya, you don't want to jump out the low refrigerant sensor unless you're in the process of filling the system. If it'* not jumpered out then the system will never accept any more freon. If you're not filling the system, it'* a good way to smoke the compressor!

Back in my real cheap days, I used to unplug the power lead to the compressor so that it wouldn't kick on with the defroster. It was one less accessory being used that would help me save gas. Think about it...cars without a/c (my Cheby p/u for ie) will defrost just fine without the compressor kicking on.
