Ya there was problems with the 32 bit kernel. Add to that unstable hardware/DDRII ram /vid driver'* and it was a BSOD waiting to happen. Once u got the bugs worked out it could be stable, but it was a lot of work to keep XP stable. There were so many security patches, I began to wonder what exactly was so right with it in the first place.
The new hardware and Op systems are so much better than the days of XP.

I still miss the look/feel of XP.

The scrolling windows and hidden menus in corners on 7 and 8 are really annoying. Wish there was a "classic XP" theme for 8.1

We have transitioned to 7 at work, and I am not sure what menus you refer to, but I was able to adjust enough settings so that it is close enough, and works well for me.
