C'mon, where're the HP guys?
If there'* anyone out there with a semi-ultra-portable laptop, I'd like to hear your opinions.
thanks

I have a powerbook G4 but if you don't want a mac, I personally would get the new HP laptops the 17" is the best. You get more for your money compared to a dell.

well, i have an HP. i like it ALOT its a dv6500t with the 15.4 inch screen. i think its pretty darn portable. i was gunna get a 17 inch screen but decided i needed portability over screen size. i spent a little more than youre budget is, but you can easily get something similar for a lesser price.
the reason i went with hp over dell was that it seemed although dells started at a lower price, the add ons were more expensive and the opposite for hp. i dunno, just my ramblings.

Mine is a bit hopped up beyond any of them on that page.
Replacing my old nw8000, which served me well for two years. New toy will be here Monday.
Kim and Katie both have Compaq'*. Both laptops have performed flawlessly for them. Kim'* is going on 2 years old, Katie'* is almost a year old.

HP does not have a 13.3 Ultra-Portable to my knowledge, From what I recall they have a 12.1" version but its much more expensive than your budget permits.
Sony has one very "mini-laptop" compared to that dell, I forget the specs..dell is a couple hundred cheaper.
When it comes to other laptops such as the "normal" (aka 15.4" or 17") or workstation category, dell, gateway, HP, sony, toshiba are constantly matching the prices to eachother. It comes down to whoever has the the best promotion at the time.
when it comes to the odd-ball form factor laptops there is a bigger variance in "bang for your buck"

I also found a Sony model that I liked. I believe it'* called the TZ. The HP is nice, but it'* a bit too big and the finish looks like it might wear off
