That is strange. You should be able to here it prime when you turn the key. It'* still works when you connect the test wire to the battery.

I wonder if there is a bad ground or short that could cause that.

i would be looking at the fuel pump relay, if you have a relay thats the same swap it, see if it works. if not pull the relay see if the pin that has the orange wire has 12v, and the blk/white has ground when you turn on the key.

I think autoZone or similar store can test batteries for you. All you need to do is take it up there and they can test it for you.

you have to have the right pressure to start, does it suputter at all? it doesnt sound like a battery issue unless the starter isnt cranking very fast i think you would know.

when coil fails the engine will start and run bad on the other 4 cyl. usually when the crank sensor goes you get no spark or an intermittent start then no start but when its not starting you get no spark. weak spark is really confusing, possibly the icm is bad. possibly bad ground.testing icm for 3800 but i would think its similar:https://www.gmforum.com/trouble-shooting-test-procedures-141/icm-test-299761/

you should pull a inj connector you should have volotage on one side, then you can make a tester to see if you have the inj. pulse with a 12v bulb. run one wire to the 12+ the other to the inj connector, the pulse from the computer is the ground. with someone trying to crank it the bulb should flash.
