If you really want a good polish and wax job you will want a porter cable polisher. I'm partial to Meguires products. Meguires #80 polish nd then meguires NXT 2.0 wax. You wont be disappointed.

Any aruba (sp) hard wax, you know the stuff your dad used and it took him 3 hours to wax his car, ya that stuff.
If you wanna strip any old wax off first you need a degreaser, like dish soap. If you dont wanna strip it use any car wash soap.
Wash it atleast twice. Then giv'r with the hard wax, apply with a clean cotton cloth or rag and remove with a polishing cloth. Dont wax it in direct sunlight or getting the dried wax off we suck.
And untill you know what your doing leave the orbital polishers/buffers alone. If used wrong they can skrew up your paint.
Also when washing or waxing if you drop the cloth on the ground its done... Find another.
Hope that helps, theres most likely other ways, but i find thats the simplest and gives a real nice shine.
