Default Aftermarket Electronic Rear View Mirror

Has anyone installed one of those aftermarket electronic auto dimming mirrors with compass and outside temp in?

The only reason I ask is because my stock mirror must have a short in it.
It keeps turning on/off at random. I can see the little red light on.. and then 2 seconds later off.

I haven't taken the mirror down yet to inspect/repair it... but I have sprayed it, and the wire connecting to it with electronics cleaner, without any results.

So that brings me to the aftermarket mirror... I figure it'* probably just as expensive (if not cheaper) then the stock auto dimming mirror.

I saw that someone already tried to wire one in... but the results from that aren't back yet.

I'm betting you have in intermittent ground or +12V supply, not a bad mirror. When the light goes out, get a voltmeter on it. It'll be alot easier and cheaper to replace with a stock mirror if necessary.

Does it turn on and off at idle or just when driving? ensure one of the 'tabs' is not pushed back in the connector if it is pull out with needle nose pliars to re seat it.

Both.... if I hit it (or wiggle the connection) it will turn on/off.
Sometimes it'* solid for like 5mins, and then "poof" goes off.

I looked at the connections, but normally only at night (since that'* when I notice the problem), the wire looks ok, but I can't see behind the mirror.

Adding a aftermarket mirror is a relatively easy task, but I can imagine that you could find a stock dimming mirror off EBay or a bone yard -- probably for a lot less than a brand new dimming unit on EBay.

In the Spring I am going to be adding a GM dimming/compass mirror on my SE because it did not come with a dimming mirror nor was it a SSE/SSEi. I plan on running the wires down the A-Pillar and tapping of power from a switched source under the dash.

That sounds pretty cool..... I'm going to try to take my mirror off someday and see if I can determine the problem. I think it'* just bad contacts.... just kinda scared about pulling/ripping the mirror off. hehe
