Painted the plastic then sanded down to the original color on the letters.

I've seen L36 covers done this way too. That'* what gave me the idea 5 years ago.

Dunno. I may put one of my black sets of covers on that car when it gets Zilla'* current black SC in the spring (Zilla gets a new one that'* a little different, but still black). Zilla gets the Aluminum (black coating) VC'*, but I still have my 'test set' in good condition here. I think the covers on both cars will look good matched to the SC'*, and the fiberglass covers need all the help they can get shedding heat.
