I think I'll drill a hole in the middle of my steering wheel and stick a gauge in there.

No, the Autometer Cobalt is a wideband A/F gauge complete with O2 sensor.

Not a bad price considering GM charged me $230. to replace my O2 sensor.
I have a spare bung installed in my exhaust specifically for this purpose.

This is the instruction sheet. Read down about the operation, it'* interesting.
