Porous aluminum oil pan?

Porous aluminum oil pan?
I took my 2004 Rendezvous to the dealer today for the very pricey 90,000 mile recommended maintenance. I asked them to check for an oil leak since I have been seeing drops on the garage floor since my last oil change a few weeks ago. I suspected maybe something loose. Imagine my surprise when they said oil was leaking through the pan due to porous aluminum. Imagine my bigger surprise (shock) when they said it would cost $814 to change the pan. The service advisor said he has seen a number of cases of this and heard Cadillac has the same problem. Has anyone heard of this? And why, if there is this problem with a 6-yr old car, has Buick not done something about it? A recall? A tech bulletin? Something? This is obviously a materials problem, or else totally bogus. Funny to me it started leaking right after an oil change. So they want $814 to put on another aluminum pan that might get the same problem? Surely if this is a common thing, someone will know about it. Thanks for any help.

which engine and is it awd? ive got about 170k on my 3400 and havent had any leaks. even if it is the price sounds bogus. if its not something your willing to attempt on your own at least get a couple different estimates.

I would not commit to anything until you look yourself. If the leak started after a oil change I would suspect the oil filter. Sometimes they just leak. Happened to my wifes truck. I put a different filter on and the leak was gone. The only way I can see a oil pan leaking is if you hit something and cracked the pan.

I would be calling the 1-800 GM number and talking to someone w/o the dealerships interests in mind. Might be a tech bulletin or something like that. And it might be covered.

I agree with dan..I had a car with a damn near crushed oil pan and it didnt leak.Anyways.If it started right after an oil change (i presume) you did it yourself.Did you make sure the old oil filters rubber o ring came off the adapter plate before spinning on the new filter?.Also you didnt aybe crack the aluminum by tightening the drain plug to much?
