Default intermittent hard start

Hi, Bonneville has been great since a/c fix. The car has always had a intermittent hard start, It isnt always in the morning it can happen after a 2 minute turn off or after a night of sitting. The problem used to happen once a month now its like once a week. My first thought is fuel pressure reg. I thought that I would post this first before I started replacing stuff. Hopefully something like this is common to bonnevilles. P.*. the car idles fine and has plenty of power. Thanks for any info- Ron

Pull the vacuum line from the FPR and see if there is any fuel in it, or has a fuel smell. Have you done any other things (plugs, wires, MAF and throttle body cleaning) trying to track it down? You may also want to buy a fuel pressure tester to check the pressure, and if it looses any after the engine is turned off.

I have replaced everything in he last two months and cleaned the tb and the mafs. I have noticed that the vacuum line to the regulator has been off from time to time. I will check for fuel smell tomorrow and let you know.

Wet fuel and vacuum line off again I stuck it back on shut the engine off after a short idle and it popped off with a small amount of fuel spray. I cant believe it hasn't caught on fire yet. I guess I need a new regulator? or just keep driving it and keep it out of the garage.

Absolutely - keep it out of the garage, and away from small children and animals. You could use it as a bbq grill. Seriously, though...get it fixed like yesterday. Bad FPRs have been known to create an explosion in the upper intake, blowing it in half and setting the car on fire. It is a critical problem. So far....you've been lucky.

Here'* an example....

Wasn't that FPR issue a factory recall? Oh yea...there was one for the 2000'* anyhow... What year is your car? If you could edit your profile and enter your year/trim level, it will show up as a signature on all your posts. That would be great - thanks!

I searched on the National Highway Traffic Safety Association

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...callsearch.cfm

Make / Models : Model/Build Years:
BUICK / LESABRE 1998-2000

BUICK / PARK AVENUE 1998-2000

CHEVROLET / IMPALA 2000

CHEVROLET / MONTE CARLO 2000

OLDSMOBILE / 88 1998-1999

PONTIAC / BONNEVILLE 1998-2000

Recall Number: 04V090000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 3800 V6 (L36) ENGINES AND CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, THE REGULATORS HAVE A MUCH HIGHER THAN USUAL RATE OF FUEL LEAKS. A LEAK CAN ALLOW FUEL TO ENTER THE INTAKE MANIFOLD THROUGH A VACUUM LINE. IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT START WHEN CRANKED, THE FUEL FROM THE LEAKING REGULATOR AND A MISTIMED SPARK CAN CAUSE A BACKFIRE.
Consequence:
THE BACKFIRE CAN RUPTURE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. THE RUPTURE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD CAN DISPLACE A FUEL LINE, PULLING AN INJECTOR OUT OF PLACE, AND CAUSING A FUEL LEAK AND POSSIBLE FIRE.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS WITH IMPROVED DIAPHRAGMS. THE RECALL WILL BE CONDUCTED IN PHASED MAILINGS. PHASE 1 BEGAN ON JUNE 30, 2004, AND PHASE 2 BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537, OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

Yeah...there seems to be some disagreement between sources on whether or not it ended with the '99 model year, or not. It does drive home the point on how critical of a problem it is, however.

They were supposed to have the newer FPR by 2002. Even so, just like any other part, they can still go bad, as you've found out. Does it say "Delphi" on yours? If so, it certainly wouldn't hurt anything to give the dealer a call.

I checked Advance Auto Parts online, and found they range in cost from about $46 for the GP Sorensen that is normal stock, to $95 for the Standard Motor Products that they can order.
