This sounds like a fuel sender. Many GM'* around this era were prone to early failure.

One good advantage you have though is you can remove the fuel level sensor from the fuel tank with relative ease. There is an access plate in the forward right side of the trunk for access to the fuel sender assembly. The fuel level sensor is part of the fuel sender assembly which also contains the fuel pump. This unit as a whole can be removed for service & troubleshooting w/o having to drop the fuel tank.

Default awesome news!

has anyone simply tryed to clean the sender? I've read that a "GM" additive cleans the sender as I think I've read it has some silver parts that get corroded from todays fuels?? Anyone read the same info?

That may be worth a try, however, more times than not the wiper portion of the variable resistor or the resistor itself often fails.

Yes, GM has an additive that may help, but real world reports indicate that it doesn't do as well after the problem shows up. It works better as a preventative measure. This is part of the TSB GM issued on it.

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS, P/N 88861011 (for U.*. ACDelco(R), use 88861013) (in Canada, 88861012), is now available.

Added Benefits and Uses

The PLUS portion of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS is the addition of a filmer additive that, when used regularly, can protect fuel system sending units from the corrosive effects of certain sulfur contaminants found in some of today'* gasoline.

Sulfur contamination can disrupt electrical continuity of certain fuel sending units and lead to erratic or false fuel gauge readings. With scheduled usage, GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS protects against the effects of harmful sulfurs in gasoline.

You Get Four Benefits
One bottle of GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS added to the fuel tank at each oil change:
^ Cleans - Sulfur corrosion from fuel gauge sending units.

^ Prevents - Harmful sulfur components from attacking sensitive fuel system electronics.

^ Protects - By coating metallic surfaces of the fuel system.

^ Removes - Engine deposits left from use of poor quality fuels.

GM Fuel System Treatment PLUS will replace the original GM Fuel System Treatment, P/N 12345104 (in Canada, 89020804). The original formula may still be available for a limited time, and provides the excellent Fuel System Cleaning aspects of the new product without the filmer.

I just had mine replaced. I used the GM cleaner about every other tank (3 times over a month) to try to clean mine. It must have been too far gone by the time it exibited noticable problems.

I am going to be running GM'* injection cleaner through the tank every month now.

Like said, by now it'* replacement time. The cleaner is a preventive, not a repair method. And don't delay too long to do the repair either. At least on the earlier models this problem precedes a larger problem of rusting and failing lines attached to the sender, causing an eventual fuel leak. I can't imagine it'* much different for yours.

You do have the advantage of acces to the sender though, so replace it or get it replaced ASAP.
