Default Lifetime warranty on parts installed by GM dealer?

Hello:

It is my understanding that any parts that are installed on my 2002 Bonneville SSEi by an authorized GM dealer have a lifetime warranty...

Is this correct?

Any parts installed by any reputable shop should have come with warranty documentation. You should consult that.

Some parts have lifetime warranty, some do not.

The same goes for any part installed by a good and reputable shop. Also, you get the same thing when you go to O'Reilly/Auto Zone/Advance Auto. Some have lifetime, others don't.

Hmmm...

For some reason I thought that if you had a genuine GM part installed by a certified GM dealer that part had a lifetime warranty.

Not sure how I got that...

Default Lifetime warranties.

Over here a lot of outfits offer lifetime warranties but there is normally a few catches.
Mostly the warranty cannot be tranferred to a new owner, you may also be required to have regular inspections at your expense.
Some have pretty devious getout clauses, notably I read a consumer watchdog article about someone having her claim for lifetime brakes refused because the car had an aftermarket body kit fitted despite the fact the kit was fitted before she had the brakes installed.
Read the small print before you buy!.

And that'* why I do a lot of work myself. The part store is the one offering the warranty on the part, and there is no random way they can get out of it. It'* awesome.

Yes. They had to be GM parts. I had the ignition switch replaced in the Bonnie and six months later it broke. the dealer paid the tow bill plus the repair. My Astro work van they replaced and tow for free the cap and rotor twice. The genuine GM parts thing is gone I think because of all the changes. I did call my dealer last month for a wiper motor for my son'* Grand Prix they did and was told that if I was handed a warranty pagers at the the time of service those items are the only thing covered. I have that for a starter. My Co. changed the service plan and the write up guy is gone at the dealer. I will ask him the next time I see him at he new shop he works at.

Recently Vauxhall (the British arm of GM) have been advertising their cars as coming with a lifetime warranty.
But it is limited to 100k miles and requires full dealer servicing, Vauxhall dealer service regularly prop up the bottom of satisfaction surveys.
So the average British car buyer gets a lifetime warranty that will be good for around 8 years, in the meantime putting up with indifferent and expensive maintenance.

we have 5yrs/100k on drivetrain, engine/trans, 3/36k on the car. but they shouldnt make you do routine maint. at the dealer. and they would have to be able to prove you didnt to deny a claim. im sure they would try for anyone that would just say ok but when it comes down to lawyers i think they would change their story.
