I'm going to jump on the bandwagon of replace the battery, but the alternator only if it is bad. It'* true that a bad battery can give the alternator a real work out and may shorten its life, so don't delay too long. Also, as mentioned, the proper battery is a must.

Did anyone bother to mention that the battery is underneath the seat? :P That'* another nice feature about these cars is that the battery stays nice and clean inside the car.

My bet is on the battery connection. About a month ago, went out to start mine, and nothing. Turns out the cable had literally fallen out of the battery from the corrosion involved. Just grab the cables and see if they are intact and there is nothing leaking.....
