Default whacky guages

Sometimes ,usually after driving for an hour or more my temp. will read wrong. Very high. If you restart the car it usually will go back to normal. The oil pressure sometimes will drop almost to zero. Restarting will fix most of the time. Voltmeter reads 18+ . Checked voltage- 14.5 engine idling.

I don't like ignoring the guages. never get a check guage light and the car runs and sound fine. its not overheating or low on oil .

Cleaned the body grounds under the kick panels. Reseated PCM gang plug.

Any other Ideas? 2004 SE 115K.

Thanks ,Craig

I would pull the cluster and reseat the connections for it. Hopefully you have a bad connection that is heating up and acting goofy. Otherwise, without having a Tech2 for testing, you might need a trip to the dealer and they will probably find it'* a faulty cluster.

make sure you disconnect the battery when you pull the cluster, i've fried some of the backlights when i left the battery connected one time, if it'* the cluster a trip to the dealer or calling Morad would be your options

Thanks for the ideas.

Drove the car about 250 miles yeasterday worked fine until about 30 miles from home.

Speedometer showed about 1/2 speed after a stop a a traffic light. no oil pressure and 18 volts. Restarted car oil pressure rose to 15psi (normally 60psi) ,voltage still 18. Checked voltage- 14.9

Whats involved in pulling the cluster to reseat?

This sounds like a ground problem. Check all grounding points while your checking the cluster.

I'll see what I can come up with for a write up on this, but it may take a while.

i've done it, first DISCONNECT the battery or you will hate yourself because some of the backlights might get burnt out, they are very fragile also be sure you don't pound on the cluster, or make any dramatic movement with it, they can be very fragile

start by taking off the trim bezel that is around the gauges to below the climate control by taking a flat head screwdriver, preferably your hands if you can and get under the trim bezel, it might take a little force to get it off, then work it up to the DIC buttons which need to be unpluged from their connector then lower the steering wheel all the way and go around the top of the cluster between the dash and the bezel and 2 clips will fall out from above the cluster, hold on to those in a safe place for now, then pull out your HUD switch or the filler if you don't have one and you can work it out

go ahead and place that aside for now, now to actually get the cluster out

you will see 7 (i'm pretty sure) brass colored clips around the perimeter, use a small flat head to press them to the one side to release then, start on the right and go top-bottom-top-bottom with the clips and work your way to the left, you need to hold the cluster from going back into the clip holes

then grab both sides and pull straight forward, it won't come out from behind the steering wheel but you done need to, its 2 flat wire connectors that will line themselves up when you slide it back one (one of the few good ideas GM had with interior design IMO) now gently slide the cluster back in and make sure all the clips are secure, now reverse the procedure with the trim bezel, hook up the battery and check to see if that solves your problem

thats re-seating it, i'm not sure where the grounds are, but the gauges are controlled by class 2 serial data i'm pretty sure so one or 2 gauges not working properly would seem to be the cluster or the IPM
