Do the easy stuff. See if the coolant is flowing.
Always try to start troubleshooting with the simple stuff. I have a bad habit of thinking the problem is the billion dollar flux capacitor , when actually, it'* the air filter.
I've spent a lot of money when trying to troubleshoot because I overlooked the obvious.

Good question. #1 priority when you get the NASTY light on the cluster is to pull codes. Do this before thinking, posting, or getting freaked out.

Post only after you've pulled the codes, or it can turn into a horrible waste of time.

I think it might be the sensor because when I said it went back down to the bottom it stayed at the bottome. I took it for a drive today and it stayed at the bottome the whole time. I was going to change the t-stat today but it'* raining once again. I wish I had a garage.

I pulled the codes using the key from autozone like I did before and all I got was a EGR problem. The temp guage is not working at all now.
