Default Front Motor mount, and tight steering

When I drive forward, I feel a big bang when I step on the gas, the mount is shot, is it a hard task, or can I do it myself?? Also, my steering was really stiff, and the column was real loose, so I went under the dash to find the bolts were loose and the whole column was pushed in about 3 inches!! I pulled it out and tightened the bolts, the steering is a little better but still tight. Do I need a new column or is something else screwed up?

You probably broke the front motor/trans mount under the #5 cylinder (driver'* side front).

It'* easiest with two people. You'll have to jack the car up by the oil pan with a block of wood between the pan and the jack to protect the pan. There are 6 or 7 bolts that go into the transmission front and the subframe (3 in each IIRC).

You can verify this mount by:

1. Set the parking brake.
2. Block ALL 4 wheels at the front.
3. Have a TRUSTED friend put the car in D, and hold the brake firmly while revving the engine.
4. You stand on the DRIVER'* side, looking over the fender. You'll see the motor lift off the mount.

Replacing the mount is a 2-hour job for two people the first time.
30 minutes for a veteran by himself the second time.
The mount should cost you $45-60.

Your steering may be normal. The SSEi'* and SOME SSE'* got a tighter turning rack. Check your RPO codes. Post a pic here. We'll tell you what rack you have and if you have the low-speed steering assist or not. We can troubleshoot from there.

From expreience, do NOT buy a mount from Autozone (Anchor). Well, at least THAT mount. The holes drilled do not match the bosses on the transmission. They didn't on mine anyways.

At most from start to finish on the first time..this should take an hour. 2 hours almost appears that you are drinking or goofing around which should not be happening when you plan to be under a car.

My first time took me about 30 minutes. Expect about an hour IMO.

I prefer to get mounts at Napa (use an AAA card if you have one for discount). The mounts are typically higher quality than Parts America chain or Autozone.

On your spare tire cover in the trunk. Snap a pic. Post it here. We'll tell you if you have either of the two steering options I was talking about.
